Big East Conference Expansion Targets Villanova Football

The Big East Conference has expressed interest in spinning the great interminable wheel of conference expansion by roping in Villanova as a football member. SB Nation’s Nova Blog reacts:

While we all knew there were some talks that were on-going, it's been very odd that nobody has come out and given a 'Yes, we're thinking about it.' That's no longer the case. Athletic Director Vince Nicastro had this to say:
"The Big East very recently communicated its interest in adding Villanova as a football member," AD Vince Nicastro told the Daily News on Thursday. "As a result, we have decided to embark on an in-depth evaluation of this opportunity."
As the article continues to suggest, the biggest hurdle is the increased funding that this will cost.

SB Nation’s Rutgers community, On The Banks, thinks it’s an odd move:

Big East football needs at least one more team to balance out scheduling, but if the concept is also to get better, why add a FCS charity case? As Dan Levy points out, if it is imperative to add a team in Philadelphia, wouldn’t it be more realistic to bring back Temple? TU is a much larger school than Nova. They’ve got a lot of momentum right now, and just beat Villanova last week. Temple gives the Big East flexibility. While it wouldn’t be ideal, they could come back as a football-only member and not disrupt the rest of the conference makeup.
Temple would be a logical move for many reasons. But calling Villanova a “charity case,” a week after they lost to Temple by a mere touchdown and a year after beating them by a field goal, may be a bit of a stretch at this point.
