Yankee Stadium George Steinbrenner Monument Has Own Atmosphere, Plate Tectonics

Monday night, in a touching, dignified ceremony prior to their game against the Rays, the Yankees unveiled their memorial of the late George Steinbrenner in Monument Park beyond Yankee Stadium’s center field fence. Now standing alongside plaques and memorials for past Yankee greats like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig is this masterpiece set on brown stone:

↵Most striking to the observer is the size of Steinbrenner’s monument, relative to the others in the park. However, what few people realize is that the plaques depict life-size representations, and that the stars like Ruth, DiMaggio, and Gehrig were much smaller than our heroes of today. For centuries, malnutrition and the spread of disease served to stunt growth from a young age, and it was only due to the efforts of luminaries like Jonas Salk in more recent generations that humans have more commonly been able to achieve their maximum somatic potential.
