The Wall Street Journal has a piece on Triestina, an Italian soccer team, and its inability to draw crowds large enough to fill up its stadium. The general manager has come up with a pragmatic solution: to pull huge banners over sections of the stands that depict the likenesses of fans, and toss in the occasional advertisement. No, really, you guys, it’s gonna be great!
Italian Soccer Team Can’t Attract Fans, Settles For Photos Of Fans
↵↵“We’ve done everything we can to get people through the gates. But the reality is that we can’t. This way at least we create a bit of atmosphere, a bit of theater.”
↵↵I’ll be honest: more than anything else, this is reminding me of All-Star Baseball, a board game with a strangely elaborate presentation that involved setting up massive cardboard stands full of fans. Perhaps Triestina will do away with actual soccer altogether in lieu of cardboard player discs and a spinner that determine whether or not a player has scored a goal.
↵I’m getting the unsettling feeling that I’m the only person in the world who knows what I’m talking about here. I might need to set up some cardboard cutouts and wax nostalgia with them.
