Turner Gill inherited an emotional trainwreck of a program at Kansas, and he’s dealing with a wildly inconsistent team that’s managed to lose games to a mid-major program AND their token I-AA patsy, while knocking off a top-25 Georgia Tech unit. Gill seems to think the key lies in team discipline, and is cracking down on players’ focus by confiscating all cell phones on gameday eve:
Turner Gill Bans Jayhawk Cell Phone Use On Game Weekends
The Jayhawks are to hand over their phones before they clock in the day before a game, and they’ll get them in the locker room after the game.
Gill prides himself on his ability to communicate. He has commented on how he wants his players to get off their phones and talk to each other.
I don’t think Kansas turned the ball over three times against North Dakota State because players were texting, but I’m not a football coach. And seriously, whether this works or not, the Jayhawks are in better hands. Can you imagine Mark Mangino returning players’ gadgets in the locker room after that loss? There’d be iPhone-shaped dents in helmets everywhere.
