Monday’s Roto Roundup: Roy Halladay Wins #21

Phillies starter Roy Halladay took matters into his own hands to ensure the Phillies clinched their 3rd straight NL East division title. Halladay threw a complete game shutout against the Nationals, giving up just 2 hits and struck out 6, in winning his 21st game of the season. It remains to be seen if he will make another regular season start. I have a feeling he will not.

Jayson Werth was the hitting star for the Phillies on Monday, going 3-5 with a HR, 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. He is now hitting .294-.387-.527 with 26 HRs and 83 RBIs. I am not so sure he will get Matt Holliday money with stats like that.

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco won his 2nd game of the season, going 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 11 hits, a walk and striking out 5. He has gone at least 6 innings and given up 3 runs or less in each of his 5 September starts. He is a late round sleeper in 2011 drafts, as he appears to be putting things together after being the Phillies top prospect a few years back.

Yankees starter A.J. Burnett got knocked around in Toronto on Monday night, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits, including 2 HRs, in 2+ innings. Burnett probably solidified his spot in the bullpen in the ALDS.

Blue Jays catcher John Buck went 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBIs. Buck is hitting .274-.307-.482 with 19 HRs and 63 RBIs. Buck will be a free agent at the end of the season, and will have no problem finding a job with that kind of power.

Orioles starter Brian Matusz won his 9th game of the season, shutting out the Rays on 3 hits in 7 innings. He struck out 8 and walked 2, lowering his ERA to 4.40, which is not bad for a 23 year old pitcher in the AL East. Matusz is another late round sleeper in 2011 fantasy drafts.

Mariners first base prospect Justin Smoak went 3-4 with 2 runs scored, a HR and 3 RBIs. The HR was his 11th of the season, and fantasy owners should expect 20+ HRs from Smoak in 2011, if not more.

Rangers DH Vladimir Guerrero went 1-5 with his 29th HR of the season on Monday. Many teams passed on Vlad last offseason, but all he has done is hit .301-.346-.499 with 29 HRs and 112 RBIs.

Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre went 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs on Monday. Beltre is hitting .323-.368-.558 with 28 HRs, 101 RBIs and 48 doubles this season, exceeding my expectations back in spring training. Beltre will more than likely test free agency, but one has to wonder what team will outbid the Red Sox. Then again, the Red Sox can move Kevin Youkilis to third base to replace him, and attempt to sign Jayson Werth.

Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz won his 17th game of the season, going 8 innings and giving up just one run on 5 hits, a walk and 5 strikeouts. His 2.33 ERA is exceptional, but I doubt he can duplicate that in 2011, especially in the AL East.

Pirates rookie third baseman Pedro Alvarez went 3-3 with a HR, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. He has been hot of late, and is hitting .249-.324-.449 with 14 HRs, 21 doubles and 58 RBIs in 325 at bats. I see Alvarez hitting 25+ HRs in 2011.
