Yes, fresh off a summer of lurid revelations that included a 15-seconds-long sexual encounter on a table in an Italian restaurant—what? that’s exactly what happened—Louisville head coach Rick Pitino appears ready to score again.
The Kentucky-Lousville Rivalry Is BACK, Baby!
Pitino’s program recently landed a commitment from Chane Behanan, a top-30 power 2011 forward prospect, and according to recruiting analyst Dave Telep, it would be a “shock” if the Cardinals didn’t soon land fellow blue chipper Deuce Bello and, best of all, North Carolina power forward Quincy Miller.
Miller mentioned the news on Twitter and added, “Big things gonna happen.”
Why is this so great, you ask?
Because college basketball thrives on rivalry, and right now, it doesn’t get any more entertaining that Louisville and Kentucky. Duke and Carolina may have more pure hate, not to mention longstanding oppositions in ideology. But for sheer entertainment and general absurdity, you can’t beat the state of Kentucky.
The Wildcats, for their part, already have three of the top 5 2011 prospects in America—Marquis Teague, Michael Gilchrist, and Anthony Davis—and there’s no question that they’ll be a top 5 team. We should all probably get used to writing that as long as John Calipari’s coaching in Lexington.
But Louisville now presents an unexpected foe for Cal and co. They’re always solid in the Big East, but this class would probably be Pitino’s best haul since arriving in Louisville, giving him the pieces necessary to mount a convincing counterattack on his in-state rivals.
And if reading the offseason chess game between college programs (and thinking two years ahead) isn’t enough to get you excited, then look at it this way: We’d have two of the five best teams in the country, 75 miles apart, coached by two of the game’s most famous (or infamous) personalities. That’s pretty cool.
It will be dubbed... SMARM VS. SPERM.
