Usually around this time of year NFL fans are going crazy with NFL draft talk. Who will be the first overall pick? Which quarterback will go off the board first? What’s the biggest reach? Are there any potential busts?
ESPN Expects 2011 NFL Draft TV Ratings To Be High
We’ve been looking at those questions but the overall buzz on the 2011 NFL draft is down -- way down -- and that’s due to the NFL lockout. The players and owners fighting over how to split a $9 billion pie has put a sour taste in the mouths of many fans as draft season rolls on.
Don’t get me wrong -- people are stil excited about the draft. It’s just not at the level it used to be.
That hasn’t stopped ESPN from suggesting that fan interest in the draft will be very high and predicts that ratings this year will be higher than ever. Maybe ESPN is right. I hope they are. But the weeks leading up to the draft, and the lack of buzz, suggests they won’t be right.
The NFL lockout has ruined a lot of things this year, namely free agency. I’m hoping it doesn’t ruin the draft, too. Unfortunately, all signs point to lower interest in the draft than previous years.
