Cam Newton Going No. 1? Not Even A First-Rounder, Joe Theismann Says

As the NFL Draft approaches, today's addition to the parade of Cam Newton critics has upped the ante. Indeed, Joe Theismann makes news because he not only says that Cam's not worthy of the top pick, but he's not even good enough to go in the first round.

SET ‘EM STRAIGHT, JOE!

“You’re talking about a kid that started one year of football,” Theismann said. “He’s rushed the ball a lot more than he’s thrown it. He hasn’t thrown the football a lot. And when he did throw at the combine, he was not impressive....I think the interview that he did with Jon Gruden showed another side of him that wasn’t impressive....I like all these [quarterbacks] as kids, but I’m talking about purely as football players, I think wherever you go, you’re stretching.”

And the one thing you can you never take away from Joe Theismann is... The guy knows his quarterbacks. Which reminds me, remember when he compared Donovan McNabb to Joe Montana?

From the archives of Dan Steinberg’s DC Sports Bog:

“I think of Joe Montana, who left San Francisco and went to Kansas City and had ‘em in the playoffs. That’s the level of quarterback and the quality that you get out of a guy that may be someplace [that wants] to move on because of contract, because of getting the other guy to play.”

Could Theismann have possibly been more right about that one?

Also: You don’t want to forget Danny Woodcock.
