2011 NFL Draft Results: Corey Liuget Selected By San Diego Chargers

Corey Liuget

#93 / Defensive Lineman / Illinois Fighting Illini

6-3

junior

With the 18th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the San Diego Chargers have selected DT Corey Liuget. This is a solid pick for the Chargers because Liuget, who hails from Illinois, can potentially play nose tackle or defensive end in their 3-4 defense.

The Chargers were connected to a number of players in the various mock drafts out there and most picks had them addressing the defensive front seven. Liuget was a popular mock draft pick for the St. Louis Rams at the 14th pick but they passed.

The Chargers decision to address the defensive line makes sense from this standpoint -- the Chiefs and Raiders, who are both in the AFC West with the Chargers, are the No. 1 and No. 2 rushing attacks in the NFL. They have to stop the run in their division and Liuget helps with that.
