2011 NFL Draft Results: Muhammad Wilkerson Bolsters New York Jets’ Defensive Line

Muhammad Wilkerson

#9 / DT / Temple Owls

6-5

305

Junior

With the 30th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Jets have taken Temple defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson, buttressing a defensive line that is trying to fight time with youth.

Wilkerson was a very productive defender in his collegiate career, getting 17 sacks in three years at Temple. He uses his size and some impressive quickness to generate pressure up the middle as a rush tackle, but likely needs some conditioning and some time to develop into a dominant NFL defender.

Wilkerson may not have played for a big school or in a competitive conference, but he should fit well with the Jets, who will need a replacement for Kris Jenkins sooner or later. If Jenkins can stay healthy for a little while, it’ll help Wilkerson develop for a team that expects great play from its defense and might not get it immediately from the Temple product.
