NFL Draft Results: Second Round Picks By Position

It’s all about the lines in the 2011 NFL Draft, with teams picking an astounding number of offensive and defensive linemen in the first two rounds. But in the second round, the cornerbacks jumped into the fray, and the six chosen tied the number of defensive linemen taken. Unlike the first round, the second was a bit more balanced as teams grabbed best available talent, in addition to need-specific players.

Here is a look at the picks by position.

Defensive back: Six, four cornerbacks and two safeties. Rahim Moore was the first safety off the board and Ras-I Dowling got the second round started as the New England Patriots picked the Virginia cornerback.

Quarterback: Two, neither of which were named Ryan Mallett. Andy Dalton was taken by Cincinnati at No. 3, followed by Colin Kaepernick, who was taken at No. 4 by San Francisco.

Defensive lineman: Six. Once again, the defensive line class is deep, and teams continued grabbing talent along the line.

Running back: Four, led by Ryan Williams. Running backs haven’t been in high-demand and the trend continued in the second round. After Williams, Shane Vereen and Mikel Leshoure were taken back-to-back, followed by Daniel Thomas near the end of the round.

Linebacker: Three, all of which were of the outside linebacker variety. Akeem Ayers and Bruce Carter were taken back-to-back early in the round, with Jonas Mouton taken near the end.

Tight end: Two, led by Kyle Rudolph. The pass-catching tight end was the first of his position taken in the draft and he was followed by Lance Kendricks a few picks later.

Wide Receiver: Four, led by Boise State’s Titus Young. He was joined by Torrey Smith and Greg Little, who were taken back-to-back, with Randall Cobb taken as the final pick in the second round.

Offensive linemen: Five. The linemen are still flying off the board and the second round was no exception. Teams looking to build from front to back were busy scooping up help along both lines on Thursday and Friday.

The third round of the 2011 NFL draft is in the books and it’s time to get caught up.
