NFL Draft 2012: Colts Will Indeed Use First Overall Pick On Andrew Luck, According To Report

According to a report Saturday, the Colts will do one thing and one thing only with the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft: select Andrew Luck.

Let all the conjecture and speculation regarding the Indianapolis Colts and their selection at the top of the 2012 NFL Draft CEASE AND DESIST!

Well, that is, if you believe ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, who reported earlier Saturday that the Colts and their owner, Jim Irsay, will indeed draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick.

According to SB Nation’s draft expert Dan Kadar, Luck is the best player entering the draft this year even though he lost out to Baylor’s Robert Griffin III for the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

That the Colts plan to use the top pick on Luck really should be no surprise. Peyton Manning will be 36-years-old next season and is coming off three neck surgeries in two years. What will be interesting is to see what the Colts do with Manning. Manning and Luck likely cannot coexist on the same Colts roster. It makes no sense, especially now that the team is “rebuilding.”

This report also seems to suggest that whomever the Colts hire as their new general manager, that G.M. will come in knowing exactly what Irsay expects him to do with the No. 1 pick.

This mean no trades. No wavering between Luck and Robert Griffin III. No sentimentality when it comes to Peyton Manning.

Andrew Luck will be the Colts quarterback next season. Period.
