San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera appears to be the front runner for the Carolina Panthershead coaching job, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com. Rivera is one of four candidates to have been interviewed by the Panthers but he’s the only one who’s been called back for a second interview.
Ron Rivera The Front Runner For Carolina Panthers Head Coaching Job
The Panthers parted ways with John Fox following the season and have interviewed Rivera, Greg Manusky, Rob Ryan and Perry Fewell.
Rivera was promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator in 2008 and he helped make (or continue) the Chargers into one of the better defenses in the NFL this year. He has worked in multiple systems and had success on the defensive side of the ball.
This is the ninth team to consider Rivera for a head coaching job, according to National Football Post, so it’s we’ll see if this is the one that he gets.
The Panthers hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft so the head coach could help determine which direction they go (especially since Andrew Luck is staying in school).
