Villarreal right back Ángel López had to be removed from Sunday’s match at the Santiago Bernabeu after colliding with the post while defending a corner kick. Though he tried to play on, López’s first attempt to react to play left the Spaniard on the turf grasping at his left knee. Today Villarreal’s web site confirmed that López will be out six months with an anterior cruciate injury, having undergone surgery yesterday in Barcelona.
Villarreal Right Back Angel Lopez To Miss Rest Of Season With Knee Injury
López had played every minute of the La Liga season before being removed in the 62nd minute of Sunday’s match, a span that included 1592 minutes over 18 starts. The 29-year-old was replaced by Mario, who had registered only five league minutes this season, spending most of the campaign with Villarreal II in the Segunda.
Villarreal currently sit in third place in Spain, their 36 point two better than Valencia, nine worse than second place Real Madrid. The Yellow Submarine host Sevilla on Wednesday, the first leg of the clubs' Copa del Rey quarterfinal. Villarreal's next league match is on Saturday when they host Osasuna.
