With the Big East regular season in full swing, there's no team that looks better than No. 5 Pittsburgh right now, while the Georgetown Hoyas find themselves facing something of an identity crisis.
No. 5 Pittsburgh Visits No. 22 Georgetown In Big East Showdown
Coming into 2011, the Hoyas were thought to be among the contenders for supremacy in the Big East this season. Now, having lost three of their past four games, you can bet the Hoyas will be desperate to prove that the hype was warranted. And there’s no better way to prove it than by beating a top five team like Pittsburgh.
What’s gone wrong the past few weeks? As Casual Hoya writes...
I have three different suggestions each addressing a possible theory for why the team has stumbled. I don’t see changing one person, subbing Nate for Jason or Hollis, making a difference. The problem is bigger, or not, and it’s about more than one player, again or not. The first theory is that we’re in a slump and we’ll break out of it soon. Second, we beat out of conference teams because they are unfamilar with the JTIII offense and thus we are very predictable in the Big East. Finally, we don’t play that hard, I think in large part to our stars pacing themselves and only turning it on in spurts. And we don’t play smart.
So, yeah. It’s been a rough 2011 for Georgetown so far. But it can’t get much worse! On the other side, Pittsburgh continues to ride high, and suddenly finds themselves among the nation’s elite. But it’s still a road game in the Big East, so expect it to be close.
As SB Nation’s Pitt blog, Cardiac Hill, wrote on tonight’s game:
...it all depends on how Georgetown shoots the ball. Playing an experienced guard oriented team on the road scares me and if Georgetown is hot from the field, it might not matter how well Pitt can rebound. Pitt doesn’t have enough great individual defenders to lock down the Hoyas’ guards, but Pitt clearly has an advantage inside. To be honest, I don’t know. This is the definition of a pick ‘em.
The game tips at 7 pm on ESPN, and it should be a good one.
