Cam Newton declares for 2011 NFL Draft
“It was a very hard decision for me, especially after coming off the great season we had at Auburn,” Newton said in a prepared statement. “I’m blessed to have been around an excellent environment and have great teammates, coaches and support from the Auburn family.”
Make no mistake, Newton will be the most contentious prospect in this year’s draft and will remain so until he’s picked.
It’s impossible to deny his natural ability. He’s a big quarterback at 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds. He spins a great ball and has the arm strength and accuracy to make NFL throws.
But is he an NFL quarterback? At Auburn he ran the ball just as well as he threw it. His throwing motion will need refining as will his footwork.
Whatever team decides to use a first-round pick on Newton – and one will – may have to give him a few years of development.
On the season, Newton passed for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 66.1 percent of his passes. He also ran the ball for 1,473 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Newton won an national title and a Heisman Trophy in his only year at Auburn. That followed a year at Blinn Junior College after playing his first two years at Florida.
