As has been said myriad times in the past several months, the Denver Nuggets have been wonderful since the franchise picked Carmelo Anthony No. 3 overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. He's a fine player who makes his teammates better. But when he has an off night, as he has a few times recently and as he did Sunday night against the best team in the league in the San Antonio Spurs? There's no hope for the Nuggets.
Nuggets Vs. Spurs: Another Off Night For Carmelo Anthony Sinks Denver
'Melo scored 12 points on 5-17 shooting with four turnovers as the Spurs waltzed away with a 110-97 win. San Antonio has reached the midpoint of its season, and stands with a 35-6 record. The Nuggets have one more to go, and now sit at 23-17. The starts and stops of the potential 'Melo trade to the New Jersey Nets continued to, well, start and stop over the weekend, and the Nuggets may very well be forced to make a tough decision between a one-and-done playoff run and flipping 'Melo for something far less than Derrick Favors and multiple draft picks.
The Spurs took 30 points from Tony Parker, who was mentioned in heavy trade rumors several months ago, and also several years ago. Parker's still there in San Antonio, winning games and making everyone forget about the sex scandal that would have blown up most teams. Parker shot 11-15. His partners in domination, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, weren't prolific scorers on Sunday night. But Duncan had 16 rebounds, more than twice what any other player on either team had, and Ginobili had a game-high seven assists. San Antonio did its job defensively, too, as the Nuggets shot just 43 percent.
Denver Stiffs notes that the Nuggets’ road woes in San Antonio aren’t all that surprising considering that the team is now 5-13 away from the Pepsi Center.
