Steven Pienaar was held out of Sunday's Merseyside Derby, with a transfer to London imminent. The only remaining question is whether he would move to Tottenham or Chelsea, and after today's news that Everton and Spurs have settled on a potential fee, all that awaits in Pienaar's decision. With which team will he sign?
Everton, Tottenham Agree Steven Pienaar Fee, Await Final Decision On Spurs, Chelsea Future
Pienaar is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning he is now eligible to sign a pre-contract deal with anybody. While Everton could hold the South African international and wait for him to leave this summer on a free transfer, David Moyes now looks set to cash-in, to the limited extend he can. Reports have Pienaar’s fee to be between £2.5 and £3 million. Such a deal would have Pienaar finishing the season away from Goodison Park.
Pienaar has been at Everton since the summer of 2007, sealing a permanent deal with the Toffees after an initial, season-long loan from Borussia Dortmund. Pienaar had been linked with a move back to Germany earlier this season, it became clear early in the January window that he was not only likely to stay in England, but the Bafana attacker was apt to move before his contract was out.
With both Chelsea and Tottenham having settled on figures with Everton, only one step remains. Pienaar needs to chose which club he wants to join. Does he confirm his agreement with Tottenham? Or, does he join the defending champions?
