Zenyatta Named 2010 Horse Of The Year At Eclipse Awards

On Monday night at the Eclipse Awards, Zenyatta, the horse who very nearly ended her career with a perfect record, was named the 2010 Horse of the Year. From the Times-Union:

There were 238 votes cast and Zenyatta received 128 votes. Blame, who beat Zenyatta by a head in the [Breeders’ Cup] Classic, got 102 votes. The third finalist, three-time Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Goldikova, got five votes.

Zenyatta enjoyed one of the most dominant careers in the history of horse racing. As a three-year-old, she won a 6 1/2-furlong race in Hollywood Park, and over the next three years she assembled an unprecedented streak of 19 consecutive wins. In the 2010 Breeders’ Cup in Louisville, which was previously announced to be her final race, she lost by an extremely narrow margin to Blame to finish at 19-1.

The Eclipse Awards, issued annually, are sponsored by the NTRA. 2009’s winner was the three-year-old Rachel Alexandra.
