Derek Lamely sits atop the leader board after Day 1 of the Bob Hope Classic on Wednesday, the third stop on the PGA Tour this season. Lamely, who was the only American rookie to win on Tour last season, shot a 9-under 63 to put him one shot ahead of J.J. Henry and Jhonattan Vegas.

Lamely shot a 7-under front nine, making five birdies and an eagle in a six-hole span, the longest streak of birdies and eagles since Brandt Snedeker had an 8-under seven-hole stretch at Torrey Pines in early 2007.

"This is going to be definitely not a sprint," Lamely said of the only five-round tournament on Tour. "The golf courses are perfect. The weather is just so good. You've just got to go out and stay aggressive every hole. Hopefully you can get hot and make a bunch of putts, and I actually got that going today."

Henry, the 35-year-old American, took a four month hiatus from golf which including traveling to watch his Alma Mater TCU football team play, and was even on the sideline for TCU's Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin. Henry is seeking his first win since the 2006 Buick Championship, and sits in good position after an 8-under 64 day one.

"I've probably never been this excited to start the year, both mentally and physically," Henry said. "I really felt refreshed and ready to go. [When] I got on the first hole, I had a perfect number with the wedge. You're a little nervous, haven't played a tournament in four months, and I hit this perfect shot that never left the flag."
