The New York Mets are rather fond of their starting outfield. With Carlos Beltran, Angel Pagan, and Jason Bay, there's good talent - if some degree of unpredictability - at all three positions. However, depth has been a bit of a concern, so in addressing that question, the team has gone out and signed free agent Scott Hairston.
Scott Hairston Signs With Mets To Provide Outfield Depth
Terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, but Hairston’s coming on a one-year contract that one assumes will be pretty cheap. He earned $2.45 million a year ago, but is fresh off the worst season of his career.
The 30-year-old veteran has spent his career with the Diamondbacks, Padres, and A's, posting a .737 OPS. Over the last three seasons, he's batted .245 with that same .737 OPS, and he's a guy with fair power who's capable of playing all three outfield positions when needed. He won't tear up the basepaths or light the scoreboard on fire, but as fourth outfielders go, he's a fine fit with some offensive upside.

Update: Hairston will earn $1.1 million, with an additional $400,000 in incentives.
