Padraig Harrington Disqualified From HSBC Championship For Moving Ball Forward

Padraig Harrington has been disqualified from the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi for illegally moving his ball forward. The violation went unnoticed by Harrington, the tournament officials, and spectators, but was reported by a television viewer with the aid of a DVR and an HD screen.

According to Golf.com:

The amateur rules official noticed that the Irishman’s ball moved after Harrington’s hand brushed it as he was removing his marker. Since Harrington didn’t replace the ball at the original spot, it should have been a two-stroke penalty. Because the penalty wasn’t assessed at the time, Harrington signed an incorrect scorecard after Thursday’s round, which led to the disqualification.

Harrington, a three-time major tournament winner, had been in second place after shooting an opening round 65, and this DQ prevents what could have been a very nice pay out for the Irishman. German Martin Kaymer leads by three strokes through two rounds at 12-under par.
