With Tomas Fleischmann out for the season with a scary blood clot injury, the Colorado Avalanche suddenly have an available forward spot available on the roster. Filling that roster spot could fall on team legend Peter Forsberg, who's reportedly going to begin practicing with the team on Saturday in another comeback attempt.
Peter Forsberg Attempting Yet Another Comeback With Colorado Avalanche
The team announced the news late Friday.
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that forward Peter Forsberg will practice with the team beginning tomorrow.
“I need to see where I am physically and practicing with NHL players is the best way to find that out,” said Forsberg.
Forsberg will begin skating with Avalanche players tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. at Pepsi Center. He will be made available to the media following his on-ice session.
It’s worth noting, as the Denver Post points out, that Forsberg had contacted the team about practicing with them prior to learning of Fleischmann’s injury.
Forsberg hasn’t played in the NHL since another one of these comeback attempts back in 2008 with the Avalanche, when he played nine games before calling it quits with foot problems. He’s suffered from chronic issues there for the last several years and hasn’t played more than 25 games in a year in the last four seasons.
When healthy, he’s one of the greatest players in the history of the game. He’s scored 885 points in 705 career NHL games, mostly with the Avalanche. The problem, of course, is that he’s not healthy, and it’s unlikely that he’ll ever be able to play the game at the Hall of Fame level he has in the past.
At this point, he’s simply hockey’s Brett Favre.
