Gameweek 24 is upon Premier League fans like the most recent episode of MTV’s Jersey Shore - fast, hot and maybe just a bit out of control. If you’ll excuse that late-night analogy, SB Nation Soccer will attempt to outline Saturday’s eight Premier League fixtures in a more straight-forward, clean and well-spoken manner. After all, this is a family site.
English Premier League Saturday: Eight Matches Highlighted By Manchester City’s Trip To Aston Villa, Tottenham’s Trip To Newcastle
The majority of England's top flight week 24 takes place over the course of six 3:00 PM kickoffs (10:00AM Eastern, 7:00 AM Pacific), with Liverpool's trip to Wolverhampton and Manchester City's trip to Aston Villa playing the part of wheat bread to the 3:00 PM meat (sandwich anyone?). Let's take a quick look at all eight matches before a team of SB Nation Soccer scribes provide you the best darndest live coverage this side of the Mississip!
From the top:
Aston Villa Vs. Manchester City, Villa Park, Birmingham - Anyone fail to hear about Darren Bent to Aston Villa this past week? Didn't think so. 17th, yes, 17th Villa will host tied for top spot Manchester City (in second, goal difference - while Villa are just off the relegation zone by the same stat ) in Saturday's late game. Bent will face off against City new boy Edin Dzeko in a battle of recently acquired strikers while Villa's defense will hope to slow a buzzing City attack. Aston Villa have won only once in their last 10 matches just as Roberto Mancini's City have lost just once in 10.
Newcastle United Vs. Tottenham Hotspur, St. James' Park, Newcastle Upon Tyne - Having been held 0-0 last time out Vs. Manchester United, Spurs will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on a Newcastle side who've claimed seven of a possible nine points from their last three matches without Andy Carroll. Buoyed by an impressive midfield and an equally impressive home support, the Toon will play pesky little brother on Saturday looking for a result.
Manchester United Vs. Birmingham City, Old Trafford, Manchester - A few weeks ago United were robbed of a certain three points when Lee Bowyer flicked in from close range to force a draw at St. Andrew's. While the preceding handball that resulted in Brum's equalizer was the game's most contentious moment, United will have sights set on three important points at home. Keep a watchful eye on the Blues' David Bentley should he make his debut Vs. United. He's a player looking to recapture form, fitness and first team action and he just may have a thing or two to prove.
Fulham Vs. Stoke City, Craven Cottage, A Charming Area Of London - Fulham for the drop anyone? Geez, I hope not. But not that far off of a shout considering Fulham have won only three league matches at Craven Cottage this season. However, Fulham have the upper hand in Saturday's fixture as the Cottagers won Vs. Stoke last time out at the Britannia 0-2 thanks to a Chris Baird brace.
Everton Vs. West Ham United, Goodison Park, Liverpool - Everton, like Fulham, are also a side that have won only three times at home this season, are an under-achieving mess, yet face a winnable match on Saturday. West Ham remain bottom and quite poor on the road this season. With three points gained at home, Everton could jump to the top half of the table.
Blackpool Vs. Sunderland, Bloomfield Road, Blackpool - Although the Tangerines have enjoyed an impressive season, they're actually on a small-ish slide having lost three of their last four in the league. However, these two met a month ago at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland with Blackpool emerging 0-2 winners away from home. Both sides have had to deal with the minor annoyance of transfer drama with Darren Bent departing the Black Cats and Blackpool's boy wonder Charlie Adam heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. This should be a brilliant match.
Arsenal Vs. Wigan, The Emirates Stadium, North London - Before you write off the Latics, Wigan have enjoyed some success against the Gunners in recent times. Running out late winners Vs. Arsenal last season at the DW and most recently, drawing 2-2 with Arsenal in December, Wigan will take the Emirates pitch with solace and maybe even a bit of confidence. Arsenal will need three points in order to keep pace with both Manchester clubs and will enter the home encounter on a high after their midweek 1-3 win at Elland Road Vs. Leeds United saw the London club advance to the FA Cup's Fourth Round.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Vs. Liverpool, Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton - Still win-less on his second stint as Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish will ready the troops to take on a Mick McCarthy-led Wolves side difficult to break down at home. With a win, Wolves would complete a famous league double over a Liverpool side who’ve won just one time in their last six attempts.
With coffee in hand, SB Nation Soccer will have live coverage of Saturday’s early match featuring Liverpool’s trip to Wolves from 7:30 AM Eastern.
