Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith will be targeted by the organization for a contract extension after leading the team to a NFC North title and NFC Championship Game appearance, general manager Jerry Angelo said Monday. The offer to Smith hasn't been made yet, but is in the works.
Lovie Smith Contract Extension Will Be Bears Offseason Priority, Says Jerry Angelo
Angelo:
We very much want to extend Lovie. That will be part of the business at hand in these next several weeks.
Smith is 63-49 as Bears head coach, taking the team to a Super Bowl against the Colts. He has a 3-3 postseason record and three division titles in his seven years in Chicago. His teams have frequently continued the tradition of strong Bears defenses, three times ranking in the NFL's top five.
Earlier Monday he was forced to defend Bears QB Jay Cutler from claims that the quarterback quit during the NFC Championship Game.
