Stafon Johnson, the USC Trojans running back whose throat was crushed in a 2009 weighlifting accident, is suing the university and assistant coach Jamie Yanchar. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the conditioning coach, claiming Yanchar was distracted and failed to properly spot Johnson during a bench press. Yanchar bumped the bar while transferring it into Johnson's hands, according to the suit.
Stafon Johnson Sues USC Over Weightroom Throat Injury
Johnson lost control during the 275-pound press, causing the bar to strike his throat, severely damaging his larynx. Reconstructive surgery enabled him to speak and even play football again. After returning for the 2010 Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, Johnson landed with the Tennessee Titans. He played during the 2010 preseason before being sidelined by an injury.
The 22-year-old is currently listed on Tennessee’s injured reserve. During four years at USC, Johnson compiled 1,617 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns, also returning 36 kicks and punts. In 2007 he was third in the nation in yards per rush.
