Random Thoughts

  • It's no wonder the Titans are looking at a lot of QB's. As you may have heard, Vince Young is likely to be traded or released, and could be playing for the Minnesota Vikings in 2011 and beyond.
  • The Miami Dolphins are also going to be in the market for a quarterback, and the same guy who said Vince Young to the Vikings is saying the Dolphins will go after a QB--via trade as well. He says Kevin Kolb is the best fit, but I'm not so sure. The Dolphins could use their first round choice elsewhere and get a different quarterback with one of their other picks. If they think Kolb is worth it though, you never know. We all saw what they gave up for Brandon Marshall...
  • I think Jake Locker is hot on the rise. He has been impressive at the podium and commands your attention. He's definitely struggled a bit, but he's still the best quarterback prospect at the Senior Bowl, and it's amazing how quickly you can forget his poor senior season with a couple solid days at the Senior Bowl.
  • Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi is a pro-ready quarterback. He could be a gem in the 3rd-4th round range. He doesn't have the strongest arm, but having watched him for three straight years, I can tell you with confidence that I thought at one point this season that he was the best QB in college football based on his decision making alone. Stanzi is not flashy, but he has experience in a pro style offense and could probably start for an NFL team in a year when he adjusts to the speed of the game.
  • Watch for Baylor DT Phil Taylor to vault up draft boards. He has good feet and at 335+, scouts are going to take notice. At one point this season, Taylor was considered a 5th round pick. A strong senior campaign and a good offseason should put him near the top of the second round. He has already talked to a few teams with higher second round choices.
  • Don't be surprised if Cameron Jordan is a lock for a top ten choice. I've been talking with some people who think he could go as high as 7 to the 49ers, and wouldn't be shocked if he did.
  • Also don't be shocked to see Texas A&M LB Von Miller drafted very early. The Cardinals have the 5th selection, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt was seen talking to him yesterday. Probably not much more than due diligence, but they are talking to him. I could see him as a lock top 15 pick.
  • There was a report out of Charlotte yesterday that the Carolina Panthers have begun the background check on top prospects, and one of the first orders of business was to talk to the high school football coach of Auburn DT Nick Fairley. This is probably pretty standard for background check, so take it with a grain of salt, but we at least know the Panthers are putting him under consideration.
  • Another player who will be under consideration is LSU CB Patrick Peterson. Peterson was at the Senior Bowl, and as you read here yesterday, he's planning meetings with some teams. The two highest teams he will be talking to are the Broncos and Panthers. Peterson says he wants to run in the 4.2's at the NFL Scouting Combine, and plans to check in at around 6'1" 208.
