State of NASCAR Address | Race Day Open Thread

The Chase for the Sprint Cup format has changed:
The top 10 points after the 26th race, Richmond, make the Chase. the 11th and 12th drivers are ‘wild cards’, the two drivers with the most wins not in the top 10 of points, make the Chase, those drivers must be in the top 20 to be eligible. If those three drivers are tied with the same number of wins, the two highest in points would get in.
If drivers are tied in points, then a tie would be broken by most seconds, third, fourth, etc.
1.) The points are reset to 2000, plus 3 points for wins [only top 10 drivers]
2.) First to tenth are seeded by wins
3.) Drivers 11 & 12 cannot move into the top 10 when the points get reset after race 26 and do not get the 3 bonus points for winning in the ‘regular season’ and would both start with 2000 points, they can, of course, move up as they garner points in the final 10 races

Here’s to a big turnout for the first “Race Day Open Thread” of the season. While technically this isn’t a race day, Brian France’s speech does have some pretty large implications for the 2011 season and beyond. It’s likely that the points-paying system which has been in effect since 1975 will no longer be after tonight.
Personally, I have mixed feelings.
While I can appreciate a simpler format for newer fans, I also feel that abandoning the system we’ve used for 35 years destroys yet another bridge between the Modern and Chase eras. Longstanding fans will suffer yet another blow that separates them from the sport they loved. I’m not entirely sure that that’s a good idea. It’s been relatively easier to compare a driver from 1997 with one from 2007.That said, we’ll see how this goes tonight.
Also on the docket for NASCAR’s CEO:
*The 2013 Car of Tomorrow
*A reflection on the success of the ‘Have at it Attitude’
*Green fuel and energy
*New media markets
