With the future of SuperLiga still up in the air, it looks like MLS may be looking for another international competition for their teams. That tournament could be a 2012 pre-season encounter involving teams from MLS, Korea’s K-League, Japan’s J. League and Australia’s A-League and could be played in Hawaii, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Pan-Pacific Championship May Make Comeback
The concept is similar to the Pan-Pacific Championships that drew an announced two-night total of 38,205 to Aloha Stadium in 2008. That event included the Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo of the MLS, Sydney FC of Australia and Gamba Osaka of Japan.
The competition was also held in 2009, and featured Los Angeles Galaxy, Japan’s Oita Trinita (2008 J. League Cup winners), China’s Shandong Luneng Taishan (2008 Chinese Super League champions) and South Korea’s Suwon Samsung Bluewings (2008 K-League & 2008 Hauzen Cup champions). The Bluewings beat the Galaxy in the final of that tournament. Mexican teams had also been invited, but did not participate. No tournament was played in 2010.
