The 1.Bundesliga sides had a rough time in midweek -- Kaiserslautern and Hoffenheim lost to 2.Bundesliga opposition in Duisburg and Energie Cottbus, respectively, without scoring a single goal. Bayern Munich saved face for the top flight with a 4-0 thumping of Alemannia Aachen, but that result was far from assured until the final twenty minutes because of some incredible profligacy by the Bavarians. However, by far the most dramatic of the midweek games was at the Veltins Arena, where Schalke 04 twice came from a goal down against Nürnberg and forced the match into extra time. With just five minutes to play, Felix Magath sent on seventeen-year-old Julian Draxler, who smashed in a spectacular winner in the hundred nineteenth minute and sent Schalke through to the semifinals.
