Freddy Adu Appears Headed For Rizespor, A Second Division Turkish Team

Freddy Adu's once promising career has apparently taken another disappointing turn. The one-time savior of United States soccer has gone on loan with second division Turkish team Rizespor, according to the Washington Post's Steve Goff.

Since leaving D.C. United after the 2006 MLS season, Adu has been with Real Salt Lake, Benfica (Portugal), Monaco (France), Beleneses (Portugal) and Aris (Greece), but unable to secure regular playing time in Europe. He trained with both Danish club Randers and Germany's Ingolstadt this winter and remains under contract with Benfica, which purchased him from MLS in the summer of 2007.

Benifca paid a reported £1,320,000 for Adu, but his market value is estimated at about a third of that now, and could be even less. Rizespor is challenging for promotion, just two points out of first place, and could conceivably be another chance for Adu to get his career turned around. He’s still just 22, but has been unable to convince any team he’s played for since leaving MLS to give him significant playing time.
