Justin Duchscherer Signs With Orioles As Rotation Depth

Free agent righty starter Justin Duchscherer has ended a heated pursuit by signing a one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles. The contract comes with a low base salary, but playing time incentives that could push it up to a maximum value of $4.5 million.

Duchscherer had been chased by a number of teams, including the Yankees and Nationals. It was reported earlier on Sunday that the Nats and Orioles were the two finalists, but it was Baltimore who ended up winning out.

The 33-year-old Duchscherer has dealt with severe injury problems lately, missing much of 2007 after hip surgery, all of 2008 after elbow surgery, and most of 2010 after more hip surgery. He's therefore a risky investment. However, he claims to feel 100%, and he has a career 3.01 ERA as a starter, making him a worthwhile gamble. With the Orioles, he'll gun for a spot at the back of the rotation, which is currently occupied by Jake Arrieta and Chris Tillman.

Update: Duchscherer will earn a guaranteed $750,000, which goes up to $1.1 million if he makes the Opening Day roster.
