The Chicago White Sox have gone ahead and locked up one of their brightest and most underrated talents, signing shortstop Alexei Ramirez to a four-year contract extension Monday afternoon.
Alexei Ramirez Signs Four-Year Contract Extension With White Sox
The contract is worth $32.5 million, and comes with a fifth-year club option worth $10 million. The year-by-year breakdown is currently unknown, but Ramirez earned $1.1 million a season ago and agreed to a $2.75 million 2011 salary back in December. This contract will kick in after this coming season, and the third and fourth years buy out what would’ve been Ramirez’s first and second years of free agency.
The 29-year-old Ramirez has batted .283 over his first three years in the big leagues, with a .430 slugging percentage and a .751 OPS. This after coming over straight from Cuba without a stop in the minors. Ramirez has also played strong defense at short, and makes for a pretty solid all-around asset with few weaknesses. There’s an argument to be made that he’s the top shortstop in the American League, and the White Sox will be thrilled to have him around for the foreseeable future.
