Freddy Garcia Signs With Yankees On Minor League Contract

Looking to add to their depth in the starting rotation, on Monday the New York Yankees signed veteran free agent Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.

Garcia will receive an invitation to Spring Training, and in the event that he makes the team, he stands to earn a base salary of $1.5 million, with an additional $3.6 million in incentives should he make it all the way to 30 starts. Garcia had earlier told a Venezuelan newspaper that his preference was to play for the Yankees, and he signed with New York over a small host of other suitors.

In camp, Garcia will compete for one of the final two rotation slots with Bartolo Colon, Ivan Nova, and Sergio Mitre. The 35-year-old righty started 28 games for the White Sox last season, posting a 4.64 ERA and the lowest strikeout rate of his career. His fastball now sits in the high-80s, rather than the low-90s it used to, but he's able to throw enough strikes to remain moderately effective, and the Yankees have signed him with little risk.
