Once considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko had a year to forget in 2010. The heavyweight superstar only competed once and suffered the first true loss of his decade-long career. His submission loss to Fabricio Werdum in June shocked the MMA world, but his absence from more recent Strikeforce events had led to speculation by some fans that the two sides may be looking to part ways.
Fedor Emelianenko Signs Multi-Fight Strikeforce Deal, Slated To Fight Antonio Silva
That doesn't appear to be the case as multiple sources are confirming claims made via Fedor's facebook page that Emelianenko has signed a new multi-fight contract extension with Strikeforce. Also, "the Last Emperor" will take part in Strikeforce's eight-man heavyweight tournament, drawing Antonio Silva in his first matchup. The fight is slated for Feb. 12 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The new contract keeps Emelianenko signed throughout the duration of the tourney, meaning American MMA fans could be treated to multiple performances by the reclusive former PRIDE Champion.
With a matchup with K1 and interim DREAM Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem possible for mid-to-late 2011, Strikeforce is positioning itself nicely to steal some much-needed thunder from the UFC. With the UFC's heavyweight division in utter turmoil at the moment due to an injury to champion Cain Velasquez, Strikeforce could be looking to steal the show in 2011.
