Mississippi St. Bulldogs defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Manny Diaz has agreed to take on the DC role for the Texas Longhorns, according to The Clarion-Ledger's Kyle Veazey and LonghonDigest's Kevin Flaherty. Diaz interviewed for the job on Tuesday as the Longhorns worked to fill the gap left by former DC Will Muschamp, who left in December to become the Florida Gators head coach.
Manny Diaz Replaces Will Muschamp As Texas Defensive Coordinator, According To Reports
Diaz put together the SEC’s third-best scoring defense in 2010 despite having fewer resources than almost any school in the conference. He only spent one season with the Dawgs, having been brought in after four impressive years at Middle Tennessee State. In 2009 the Blue Raiders had one of the Sun Belt’s top defenses, giving him back-to-back years with a defense in its conference’s top three.
He's known around the SEC for being both a sharp X's and O's guy and an energetic teacher. His defenses have been aggressive and rock-solid against the run, something Texas would love to improve at after giving up 264 yards to the UCLA Bruins and 261 to the Kansas St. Wildcats.
