Saturday afternoon was a crazy period for college basketball, and the events that transpired in Austin, in the day’s marquee game, were just the nuttiest part of a crazy day.
No. 9 UConn 82, No. 12 Texas 81: Huskies Survive Wild Game On Road
After a bizarre throwaway play to give Texas a chance to win the game in regulation, Connecticut got a stepback jumper from Kemba Walker with 5.1 seconds left in overtime, and won on the road at Texas, 82-81.
Walker had just 22 points, below his season average, on horrific eight-of-27 shooting, but hit that game-winner and swished an amazing 40-foot three-pointer in overtime. He was helped by Alex Oriakhi's 20 rebounds, 10 offensive, and 15 points from freshman Shabazz Napier.
Texas star Jordan Hamilton had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Longhorns in the losing effort.
It was another UConn freshman that nearly threw away the game — literally — for the Huskies. Roscoe Smith ended up with the ball with under 10 seconds left in regulation, but inexplicably launched it into the stands, likely hoping to run out the clock.
The turnover game Texas a chance to win the game, but J’Covan Brown missed a potential buzzer-beater, and the teams went into overtime tied at 75-75.
