Cardinals vs. Brewers, NLCS Game 3 Preview: Time, TV Schedule, Pitchers And More

The Cardinals routed the Brewers in Milwaukee on Monday, winning 12-3 to even the NLCS at one game apiece. With two aces on the mound Wednesday, it'll be a huge surprise if runs aren't scarce in Game 3. Chris Carpenter takes the mound for St. Louis, while Yovani Gallardo gets the nod for the Brewers.

“It’s our guy against their guy,” Brewers right fielder Corey Hart said. “Both our best guys.”

Carpenter has a 2.94 ERA in 11 postseason starts, including a three-hit shutout against the Phillies to clinch the NLDS last week. In four starts against the Brewers this year, he's 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA.

Gallardo has an 0.86 career ERA in the postseason, albeit in just four appearances. He’s traditionally struggled against the Cardinals, though, losing seven of eight decisions with a 5.66 ERA over his career, including two starts this September.

“Well, I can’t explain it,” Gallardo said. “I’m 1-7 against these guys but I try to forget about those things. I mean, even if it goes the other way around, 7-1.”

The Brewers don’t need an explanation, but they do need him to reverse that trend if they’re going to avoid falling behind, which history suggests could be foreboding. According to Elias Sports Bureau, teams that win Game 3 after being tied 1-1 in a best-of-seven series have gone on to clinch the series 72 percent (58 of 81) of the time.

Game Date/Time: Wednesday, Oct. 12, 8:05 p.m. Eastern

Stadium: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

TV: TBS

Projected Starters:
Chris Carpenter (11-9, 3.45 ERA)
Yovani Gallardo (17-10, 3.52 ERA)
