eBay Item Of The Day
I see the program from the Cubs Class A Western League affiliate (one of 18(!) Cubs farm teams in 1948) and it makes me worry that no member of the team ever got the Tucker automobile promised on the cover. Tucker went el foldo after producing right around 50 cars, making it improbable that a Des Moines player got one. I cry “outrage” six decades later!
Which of the 1948 Des Moines players deserves the Tucker retroactively?
Randy Jackson: .322 batting average, .460 slugging. Led team in at bats and total bases.
Russell Kerns: 21 home runs. .275/.482
Carl Sawatski: Led team with 29 homers in only 338 AB. Slugged .595 and earned a call-up to the Cubs.
Red Treadway: Team leader in hits with 158. Batted .352.
Bob Kelly: Only 20, had team-best 14-7 record with a 2.92 ERA.
Or would you say that none of them are worthy of the great Tucker automobile, car of the future!
