For one million of your American dollars, you can own one of the most storied balls in the history of the game. A few things about the play that ended Game 6 of the '86 Series in New York's favor and made this ball the spherical superstar it is:
eBay Item Of The Day
1) Had Bill Buckner come through with men on base in previous games, there would have been no Game 6.
2) Had Buckner driven in any one of the eight men he stranded in Game 6, the game wouldn’t have reached extra innings.
3) As Mookie Wilson has said, there was no way the limping Buckner was going to beat him to the bag, even if he had fielded the grounder cleanly.
4) Had Mookie beaten Buckner to the bag, there would have been runners on first and third with two outs with Howard Johnson at the plate and the game tied 5-5. That is, unless Bud Harrelson, a kamikaze-minded third base coach if ever there was one, waved Ray Knight around while Buckner was busy racing Mookie to the bag.
5) Buckner’s error has completely overshadowed the wild pitch charged to Bob Stanley that allowed the tying run to score and get the winning run in the person of Knight into scoring position. In Stanley’s defense, should it have been called a passed ball on Rich Gedman?
