Top small-school player Trumaine Johnson of Montana pleads not guilty

Montana cornerback Trumaine Johnson, one of the top small-school prospects in the nation, pleaded not guilty today on charges of obstructing a peace officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Johnson and Montana quarterback Gerald Kemp were involved in an incident at Johnson’s apartment early Sunday morning. Police were at the apartment to shut down a party.

According to reports, Kemp allegedly hit an officer in the chest and was tased. When Johnson allegedly tried to intervene, the Missoulian newspaper reports that he resisted getting on the ground and was also tased.

A juried trial is scheduled for Feb. 7.

Fortunately for Johnson, that is after the 2012 all-star showcase games. When I asked small-school guru Matthew Elder of Buffalo Bills Draft who his second-best non-FBS play was he said Johnson. Here’s some of what Elder had to say about Johnson:

What you have in Johnson is a tall and speedy CB who minimizes most WR’s assumed size advantage. At 6’2, 205 lbs. he can play in press coverage, he can turn and run with almost any WR, and he will go up after the ball at its highest points. It’s very rare to see a player with his combination of size and athleticism at CB. That being said many feel like his eventual position in the NFL will be at FS where he can utilize his athleticism in space and would have great range at the position.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
