Minnesota Coach Jerry Kill Gets Seven-Year Contract Extension

Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill has signed a seven-year contract extension.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers have signed head football coach Jerry Kill to a seven-year contract extension, the school announced on Tuesday.

“This contract represents a significant commitment to Coach Kill and our belief in his vision for Gopher football,” Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi said. “He has proved over the past 10 months what a great fit he is at the University of Minnesota and I have been very impressed with him as both a coach and a person. We are lucky to have him and I am thrilled that we now have an agreement in place that has secured Coach Kill as our head football coach well into the future.”

Kill had been named the head coach on December 6, 2010, replacing Tim Brewster, but had been coaching under a “Memorandum of Agreement” with the university. Today’s extension is retroactive to last December and runs through February of 2018.

The 50-year-old Kill began his college coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Pittsburg State in Kansas in 1985. After a three-year stint as a high school head coach, Kill returned to Pittsburg State in 1991, where he was offensive coordinator for three seasons before landing his first college head coaching job in 1994. In 16 seasons as a head coach at Saginaw Valley State (1994-98), Emporia State (1999-2000), Southern Illinois (2001-07) and Northern Illinois (2008-10), Kill had compiled a 127-73 record prior to being hired by Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers are 1-6 in Kill’s first season, including 0-3 within the Big Ten, and have been outscored 251-131.
