Jerry Dipoto To Be Named Angels’ General Manager, According To Report

The Angels may have found a replacement for Tony Reagins, who resigned as the team’s general manager in September.

Nearly a month after Tony Reagins’ resignation as general manager of the Los Angeles Angels, it appears as though the team may have found itself a new GM in Jerry Dipoto. Buster Olney tweets:

Sources: DiPoto to be named #Angels GM. #MLB

Dipoto spent eight seasons in the major leagues before retiring in 2000. He subsequently served in a variety of administrative roles before being named interim general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010. At age 43, Dipoto would certainly be one of the youngest general managers in baseball.

Throughout the 2000s, the Angels had been a postseason fixture. The team reached the playoffs six times within an eight-year span, including, of course, the franchise’s sole World Series title in 2002. In 2011, however, the Angels missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

Previously, the Angels had reportedly sought the services of Rays general manager Andrew Friedman. Being a first-time GM, Jerry Dipoto certainly isn’t as big a name. Should he assume the role, we’ll see what a relatively young GM can do with a relatively young team.
