In case you missed this little highlight from Saturday's Stanford v. UCLA game, which featured soon-to-be-very-rich quarterback Andrew Luck throwing for 227 yards, 3 touchdowns, and completing 85% of his passes, we present for you Mr. Luck doing his best 'slash' impersonation. 'Slash,' of course, is a reference to former Colorado QB Kordell Stewart who, after landing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was used as a quarterback/runningback/wide receiver/punter.
First Pick In 2012 NFL Draft, Andrew Luck, WR, Stanford
Now, unlike Stewart, Andrew Luck probably will not suck at the NFL level throwing a football. But, similar to Stewart, Luck seems to have some pretty damn good receiving skills.
On a trick play in the first quarter, Drew Terrell tossed a four-yard completion to Luck, which gained a first down. The play kept the drive alive before Luck eventually found Coby Fleener in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown, which, in itself, was another very impressive one-handed grab.
And while guys like Michigan State's Kirk Cousins or maybe even Wisconsin's Russell Wilson certainly look like they could be good pros (Wilson made some throws Saturday night against Nebraska that were absolutely NFL-caliber), none come close to Luck's potential and upside. At least not, in the minds of most NFL talent evaluators.
In the 'Suck for Luck' sweepstakes, which should get very interesting December if we start seeing teams perhaps intentionally lose ballgames in the NFL just to get a shot at drafting Luck, the current favorite for the Stanford phenom is the Indianapolis Colts (0-3). The great Peyton Manning will be 36 and coming off a his third neck surgery in two years next season. The time to think of his replacement is now. Some might say the Minnesota Vikings (0-4) are a possibility, but they spent the 12th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft on quarterback Christian Ponder.
