When going through a mock draft, one of the first things I do is look for unique names. At this point, we’re all well-acquainted with the players and have a good idea where they’re expected to fall.
Quickly going through a handful of mocks, all but one have the same group of players. That’s why we’re focusing on this one from Football Fan Spot.
Rock out with your mock draft out: Football Fan Spot
The unique player that makes this mock is Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus. He is mocked to the Green Bay Packers at pick No. 31.
The junior leads the nation in sacks with 11.5. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Mercilus has burst onto the scene this year after a quiet start to his college career. Mercilus has spread his production out nicely, registering a sack in seven different games.
This mock projects him as a linebacker, but Mercilus doesn’t seem to have the athleticism or first-step quickness for the position, especially in Green Bay’s scheme.
One of the interesting scenarios in this mock is Robert Griffin III being picked before Matt Barkley. Griffin goes seventh overall to the Redskins while Barkley is given to the Seahawks ninth.
The other thing I try to look for in mocks is where Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict falls. Burfict is having an up-and-down year and is all over the place in mocks. In this mock he goes to the Bengals 14th overall. Make your own wacky jokes.
