Call it the Immaculate Reception Part 2. Or just call it the defining play of the most bizarre college football weekend of the season. For the first time ever, three of the top five teams in the BCS standings lost – Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Oregon.
Video: Kendall Wright’s tip catch defines a wild college football weekend
Oklahoma lost to Baylor in part due to plays like this one. Down 24-17 in the fourth quarter, the Bears needed a big play and star senior wide receiver Kendall Wright provided one. In stride, Wright grabbed a tipped pass from Heisman Trophy candidate Robert Griffin III. It was so perfect, it was almost meant to be.
Iowa State got solid play throughout the game from cornerback Leonard Johnson to help stop Justin Blackmon and Oklahoma State Friday night. Matt Barkley of USC didn't need a wild play to beat Oregon Saturday night. Instead, the Trojans' defense needed to grind out a late comeback by the Ducks to win 38-35.
In the wake of the most calamitous weekend of the season, we’re left with BCS chaos. For us NFL Draft fans, we could get another LSU/Alabama contest rife with draft talent. Of course, LSU has to beat Arkansas on Friday and we’ll have a big preview of that game later in the week.
