Jack Del Rio Fired As Jaguars Head Coach, According To Report

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Jack Del Rio, according to reports.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Jack Del Rio, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN. There was speculation that Del Rio would be fired yesterday, but he continued on with his normal Monday afternoon press conference. Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver was asked about Del Rio's job status on Sunday after the team fell to 3-8 losing to the Houston Texans, saying "That is for another day."

That day was apparently this morning. Del Rio had been the Jaguars head coach since 2003. After making the playoffs in 2007 and beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, Del Rio was given a 5-year, $25 million extension. Since that season however, the team has yet to field a winning season and has been known for late season collapses late in the season and now heading for their fourth straight non-winning season. There were many who speculated Del Rio would be fired after last season, but it's believed the NFL Lockout prevented owner Wayne Weaver from making the move, due to a shortened offseason.

In the wake of the Del Rio firing, Tania Ganguli of the Florida-Times Union reports that defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will take over as the interim head coach.
