Despite throwing for 28 touchdowns and 3,349 yards this season, Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones should consider not entering the 2012 NFL Draft.
Scouts say Oklahoma’s Landry Jones shouldn’t enter 2012 NFL Draft
At least that’s what two NFL regional scouts told media personality Lance Zierlein on Sunday.
This is notable for a few reasons. Namely, the Texas-based Zierlein was talking to scouts who have probably seen and evaluated Jones on several occasions the past two seasons. If they were national scouts, I’d take a little less stock in their opinion.
Secondly, Zierlein isn’t prone to BS’ing people. If he’s getting information like this, there is plenty of credence to it. It should also be noted that Zierlein is a staunch draft follower who does his homework on players.
Last, and probably most important, Jones looks like he needs another season with the Sooners. His inability in the face of pressure has been widely documented. That kind of pocket poise can be honed best in college against inferior competition. As Jones showed on Saturday against Texas A&M, he also has a propensity for overthrowing his receivers as well. What ends up as overthrows in college could become interceptions at the next level.
Against A&M, Jones completed less than 50 percent of his throws, his worst game of the season. He'll also be without No. 1 wide receiver Ryan Broyles the rest of the season after he tore his ACL. Jones has three more regular season games and a bowl to prove otherwise, but right now the scouts could be correct about his immediate future.
