Michal Neuvirth has had a rough season, but a 26-save shutout Thursday will certainly help him in the confidence department.
Neuvirth's 26-save shutout was a bright spot in a dim season for the goalie as he led the Caps to a 1-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets.
Neuvirth made Alex Ovechkin’s late goal stand and Washington earned a much-needed win over Winnipeg, vaulting over them in the Southeast Division standings. While the win will boost the confidence of the entire team, it will help Neuvirth the most.
Entering the game, Neuvirth was statistically one of the worst goalies in the NHL (3.73 GAA, .875 SV%). He had been relegated to back-up duty upon Vokoun’s arrival despite the veteran’s struggles this season. The fifth shutout of Neuvirth’s career will definitely give him some positive momentum, but it could also help push Vokoun. Goaltending has been a weak point for the Caps this season, so perhaps a little competition will bring the best out of both of them.
