Want to see some of the greatest sports art ever? Take a look at college football program covers of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s. How can the presence of this Navy-Notre Dame program be justified on a page dedicated to baseball? Well, it's a tangential link, but the game was played at Babe Ruth Stadium - the short-lived designation of the ballpark the St. Louis Browns would soon be calling home.

Notre Dame won the National Championship in 1949, rolling to a 10-0-0 record. They outscored their opponents 360 to 86, including a 40-0 win over Navy in this game. The 1949 season capped a four-year period in which the Fighting Irish did not lose a game (36-0-2). Like Army, Navy was good during World War II. Unlike Army, though, they fell on hard times immediately afterwards, going 2-23-2 from 1946 to 1948. The ‘49 team was an improvement at 3-5-1.
